As a blogger, you want to showcase your best content and draw your audience in. You also know that you need to play to the search engines so you can get that sustained organic traffic. But how do you begin this process? And is it possible to please both your human audience and the Google bot? Yes, it is absolutely possible and it all comes together when you create perfect landing pages.
Now, some may call them sneeze pages but for our purposes, we’re calling them landing pages. Because, ideally, this is where you want your audience (and Google search) to land on your blog.
What is a Landing Page?
A landing page, as mentioned above, is where you want your audience to land. It is not a random collection of links, but a well thought out page (or post) around a related topic. A landing page will look similar to your regular blog posts but you really want this one to be your best of the best. You can also think of it as a round-up of your own content. Landing pages will showcase your content, not only to your audience but also to search engine bots.
A landing page can then become your pillar content. You can link to your landing pages in your blog’s menu to further showcase your content.
But, you may ask, does it really have to be a page or can I make it into a post?
This is all a matter of preference. A WordPress page is static while a WordPress post would be pushed into your RSS feed. That’s the major difference between the two so it’s really up to you if you want to make your landing page a WordPress page or a WordPress post.
How to SEO Your Landing Pages
So how do you effectively use a landing page for SEO? Well, it’s simple enough really! When you know what the search engines are already sending you traffic for, you can come up with a landing page idea. Or, if you take a look at your blog posts and determine what your primary topic(s) are, you can create a landing page around that idea. Then, you would go about with keyword placement and SEO optimization on your landing page just as you would for any blog post.
Ideally, you should have a SEO optimized landing page for every major topic that you write about. This helps not only your audience really know what you’re about, but it also helps the search engine bots know that you’re an authority on these topics.
Landing pages are also great for your on-site SEO because they provide interlinking opportunities (your post to the landing page and vice versa).
Landing pages should be a key part of your overall SEO strategy if you aren’t already using them.
